where arts & community can flourish in Stoughton
about us
Depot Hill Creative is an arts and innovation initiative proposed by the Smet Foundation, aiming to transform underused historic spaces in Stoughton into vibrant hubs for artists, makers, and the wider community.
a Smet Foundation initiative
Guided by the Smet Foundation’s longstanding commitment to fostering creativity and supporting local communities, Depot Hill Creative is planned to offer artist workspaces, community classes, and cultural events—all rooted in Stoughton’s rich heritage once the building acquisitions and restorations are complete.
why Stoughton?
John Smet, a proud graduate of Stoughton High School (Class of 1974), has remained closely connected to his hometown despite living in California. He and his wife, Cindy, see Depot Hill Creative as a major asset to Stoughton—enriching the local arts scene, complementing the city’s historic Opera House and Main Street, and uniting forward-thinking businesses like Abel Galleries, Grand Inspired, The Lageret, and Innovation Center Stoughton. This project goes beyond development; it’s about creating a place where residents and visitors can gather, experience the arts, exchange ideas, and build meaningful relationships.

“Depot Hill Creative is our way of investing in the dreams of Stoughton’s residents and ensuring they have a home here.”
our vision
Preserve & Renew
We plan to faithfully restore the historic Stoughton Train Depot and 500 E. Main Street, honoring their architectural legacy while giving them fresh purpose.
Build Community
We intend to offer classes, workshops, and events that bring neighbors, visitors, and innovators together to celebrate local talent.
Support Creators
Our goal is to provide accessible studios, collaborative spaces, and programming for artists, artisans, and makers of all disciplines.
By creating jobs, attracting visitors, and enhancing Stoughton’s cultural life, Depot Hill Creative will be part of a larger Arts & Innovation District on East Main Street—once the necessary approvals and renovations are completed.
